I think by now we have established
that we really don't need a good reason for a
road trip. We take them on weekends or week long
vacation trips, so are we honestly to pass up
the opportunity to go somewhere on a 3 day weekend?
Now that Gambler and Twister are self employed,
and Chimaera has changed to a job where he has
Fridays off that has turned this average 3 day
weekend into a 4 day weekend. What sane person
could resist? Wait, who said we were sane? Anyway,
enough of the conversation with the voices in
our heads. Time to put this trip on the web.
Friday (Chimaera):
Well folks, we hit the open road
today around 11am and our journey began. This being
the first road trip for me (Chimaera) in the HHR,
I can proudly say that this is a great vehicle! Kudos,
Chevrolet!
Our first stop of the day short of bathroom breaks
was Investment
Collectable Cars in Tifton, Georgia. Yes, this
is a dealership, but well worth the stop for car lovers.
Our next stop brought us to the Crime and Punishment
Museum in Ashburn, Georgia. Truly excellent! This
museum is a show case of Turner Country's jailhouse
filled with paraphernalia including shanks, ball and
chains, shackles, a cat-of-nine-tails (used for "encouraging"
inmates on the chain gang to work a little more efficiently),
an inmate uniform from the 1930's , and a genuine
replica of Georgia's "Old Sparky" which
I was made to sit in by Gambler and Twister. The jailhouse
also sports living quarters on the first floor for
the Sheriff and his family with the cells on the second
including a separate room used for "hangin'"!
All in all, with the admission price of only $6.00
per person this is a great stop, the tour consists
of a short video detailing the prison system in Georgia
from conception to today followed by the guided walkthrough
of the building by one of the town locals, (this on
just happened to be the editor of the town's newspaper).
Our next stop brought us to our hotel, which will
bring us to the conclusion of this day.
We decided to go into town and visit the Coke Museum.
We drove in town enough to catch the MARTA Train.
Marta is the Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.
We took the train to the Downtown Atlanta stop which
we thought that was where the Coke Museum and Underground
were at. Um we were very wrong. We walked the six
blocks to the coke museum. Along the way we took
a few wrong turns, including what was meant to be
a short cut through the Sherridan. We ended up coming
back out the same doors about forty five minutes
later. After fighting through the homeless on the
way, we finally got to the coke museum. We have
been there enough times that we skipped most of
the tour stuff, but we highly recommend it to anyone
who has not been there before. The highlight of
the Coke Museum tour is easily the last room you
hit before the gift shop. You get to sample Coke
products in different flavors from around the world.
Some taste pretty good while others taste like engine
degreaser. There are perfectly blended versions
of the drinks that you can get at the grocery store.
There is a huge difference in the flavor of Sprite,
Barqs and Coke when they are mixed freshly and in
the proper proportions.
When we left the Coke museum we hit Underground
Atlanta. Underground is a mall that is built in
the storefronts of old Atlanta before the city was
rebuilt. There isn't really anything impressive
about the mall but its still a landmark, it is worth
saying that Hooters has moved out of Underground.
We left Underground by MARTA and went back to the
HHR. We came back north to Sugar Loaf mall where
we watched X-Men III which Chimaera will review
soon. We left the theater and came back towards
the hotel. We ate dinner at Cracker Barrel. When
we got back to the hotel, our internet connection
was still down. The hotel had been struck by lighting
3 days before and the Manager said that they were
back up. For about 80% of the hotel they were but
for our room which was down at the far back end
of the building, we did not have a connection. After
arguing for about an hour with the hotel manager
about it, we asked to be moved to another room where
we could connect. She claimed that the hotel was
full so we could not move. When I went up to the
front desk, the night desk clerk was just checking
in and called her on her little fib. It turns out
that all of the rooms with our needs were still
open so he moved us to another room where we finally
had internet connection. So here I am, typing the
days logs and finally able to upload the page.
Today, we actually got a chance
to sleep in, Hooray! A vacation just isn't a vacation
without at least one day to sleep till whenever.
Our list of activities for the day was short and sweet.
We went to Six Flags White Water Amusement Park. After
wondering the roads between Six Flags and Marietta,
Georgia thanks because of a lack in navigational planning,
we finally made it to White Water. This is a good
water park, filled with many great slides and other
water themed attractions including a 750,000 gallon
wave pool that some kid "bent a biscuit"
A.K.A. kiddy poop. Other than that, our excursion
to this water park was fun.
After leaving the park, we decided to call it a
day, and head back to the hotel for some relaxation.
We have to make tonight an early night because we
have a 5:00AM wake up call, our appointment at the
Georgia Aquarium is at 8:00AM and our hotel is about
an hour from the aquarium.
Well, if you are going to have
to ask for a 5AM wake up call, make sure that the
hotel has someone manning the front desk at those
hours. Ours didn't. Luckily Chimaera woke up early
enough for us to make it to the aquarium on time.
Our starting time for the visit was 8:00AM. If you
are going to go, I recommend getting an early appointment
time. The aquarium is a must see. I will let the pictures
do the talking.
