Summer at Stephen Foster Folk
Culture Center State Park revolves around the
river and trails. Flowers bloom throughout the
season amid dense green foliage and native species
include blazing star, ladies tresses, Spanish
needle and palmetto. Bird watchers may easily
spot several species of woodpeckers, hawks, herons,
ducks, owls and other birds and wildlife. The
park offers a section of the Florida Scenic Trail
that skirts along the edge of the Suwannee River.
Nearby Big Shoals State Park and Public Lands
has 28 miles of trails for hiking, cycling, and
horseback riding.
The Suwannee River experiences
periods of drought and flooding throughout the
year. During periods of drought caves and limestone
formations are exposed along the riverbank, revealing
habitat for alligators and other wildlife. During
periods of moderate to high water, the river current
ranges from 2 to 3 miles an hour or more. Canoe
and kayak liveries are located in White Springs
and surrounding counties, offering trips of half
a day or more.
